About hotend

hotend is an independent project to help you choose the right 3D printer without falling into inflated marketing or sponsored top-10 lists. Verified specs, side-by-side comparisons and a data-driven verdict — not commission-driven.

Who's behind it

I'm Marco López. I make tech and maker content on my YouTube channel, @marcojlv, and 3D printing is my latest obsession. Setting up and tinkering with my own printer — a Bambu Lab A1 — I got fed up with how hard it is to find reliable, comparable data across so many options. That's how hotend was born.

I'm not a lab that has tested 40 machines, and I won't pretend to be. hotend's value isn't my expert opinion: it's the data. What I know first-hand I cover on the channel; what I don't, I verify against sources and cite. Honesty first.

How we work

Each printer's specs are verified against the official manufacturer's spec sheet and cross-checked against independent reviewers (Tom's 3D, CNC Kitchen, Aniwaa, All3DP). When marketing and reviewers disagree, we note the nuance. We don't test every model in person: we synthesize verifiable sources and say so openly.

Why hotend

Methodology

The data lives in a relational database, not in the HTML: each printer is a row with its specs, its sources and the date they were checked. The sheet, the comparator and the material table all read from it, so a corrected figure is corrected everywhere at once.

The verdicts you see computed — which machine wins on each spec, which materials one can handle — are not opinion: they are deterministic rules over those numbers. "It won't print ABS" means its nozzle doesn't reach the 240 °C ABS needs, and the sheet shows you the figure. Where a number is missing, we say it's missing rather than filling the gap.

On freshness, plainly: there is no robot checking prices every day. The price we show is the manufacturer's MSRP, which barely moves, and the sheet says so, so you don't mistake it for a shop price. Specs are re-checked by hand against the official page when a model changes or someone reports an error, and some sheets carry a last check that is a few months old — where that's the case, the sheet says it. New models go in as soon as there are verifiable official specs.
